Intro to Linocut

Explore the intersection of printmaking and comics in this hands-on workshop that combines traditional linocut techniques with visual storytelling. Participants will learn how to translate characters, narratives, and sequential imagery into bold relief prints while developing an understanding of how comics use pacing, composition, and visual rhythm to tell a story. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of sketching, transferring designs, carving, inking, registration, and hand-printing, with an emphasis on composition, contrast, and expressive line quality. Through demonstrations and guided studio exercises, participants will create original comic-inspired prints while gaining confidence in both the creative and technical aspects of relief printmaking. No prior printmaking experience is required - just a willingness to experiment and tell stories through images.

Kat Dienno is a printmaker and educator based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Since 2002, she has taught at Xavier University and currently teaches drawing and illustration, printmaking, and art history. Her current work examines the historical representation of women in art, reinterpreting canonical masterworks through a contemporary female perspective. By revisiting these influential images, she explores and challenges the systems, narratives, and power structures that have shaped the art world and determined whose voices and contributions have been recognized and celebrated.
