A class for kids, created by kids! Thanks to The Dapper Hammer (Kalamazoo) for letting us use their super fun youth class idea! Here's what their director has to say about the idea behind this workshop: "A couple years ago, after spending the holiday season making dozens of cutting boards, planters, and candle holders, I was left with buckets of really cool scraps and off cuts. My kids came to the shop with me one evening and while I was cleaning, they raided the scrap bin and started sanding, gluing, nailing, and screwing these scrap pieces together into what my daughter called 'Scrappy Sculptures.'"
In this class, youth will learn about different varieties and colors of wood, learn to use sanders, screwdrivers, clamps, speed squares, and most of all – their imagination! There’s no limit to what kids can create with the time and space to explore new ideas. The class will begin with an introduction and safety talk, some short tool demonstrations, and then students will design and create their own sculpture using hand tools, scrap wood, and glue.

Annie Gordon/Do It Yourself Darlin
Do It Yourself Darlin empowers people from all backgrounds to maintain, improve, and engage with the inner-workings of their homes through accessible hands-on education that builds confidence and independence. We fill a critical gap in practical home education: teaching the fundamentals of how homes work and equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to care for them responsibly. Our workshops create an accessible, inclusive space where homeowners, renters, and people historically underrepresented in the trades can learn, experiment, and gain the confidence to “do it themselves” or communicate effectively with professionals. Through this work, Do It Yourself Darlin strengthens housing stability, promotes equity in access to the trades, and empowers people to take charge of their homes and futures.
