Description


Experience the rich cultural traditions of Zimbabwe through the hypnotic sounds of the mbira (thumb piano) and the expressive movements of traditional dance. This class offers hands-on instruction in techniques rooted in the practices of Zimbabwean culture.

Open to all levels, the class emphasizes learning by doing - through listening, repetition, and group participation. Whether you're a musician, dancer, or complete beginner, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the music’s history and the joy of creating in community.

No prior experience necessary - just bring your curiosity and willingness to explore. Instruments will be provided when possible.

About the Instructor

Chiedza Melody Wheeler

Chiedza Melody Wheeler, known professionally as Chichi Wembira, is a versatile mbira (Zimbabwean thumb piano) player, dancer, vocalist, songwriter, and percussionist. Originally from Zimbabwe and ancestrally belonging to the Korekore tribe, Chichi received a Diploma in Music from Music Crossroads Academy in Zimbabwe, and has performed both as a solo artist and band member throughout Zimbabwe and at international events including Ethno Sweden 2018, Ethno USA 2021, Ethno Zimbabwe 2023, Bia Afrika Roots Zambia 2021, and Miombo Magic Festival 2017, 2022, and 2025.

CCAC’s scholarship program was created so that everyone has access to the arts and can express themselves. Students may receive scholarships of up to $100 per session (Spring, Summer, and Fall) based on availability by filling out a simple form.
